In the October 1997 Tree Fruit Postharvest Journal

It is harvest season in the Washington State apple industry and the fruit is maturing rapidly. I believe it would be a good time to share my thoughts about CA regimes. I have combined my knowledge of the research on storage with my observations on industry practices in an article titled "Observations on Storage Regimes for Apples and Pears, 1997." Producers outside Washington State should be warned that fruit behavior in storage might be very different and they should view these comments with caution.

Also at this time of year, storage operators depend upon the calibration of everything from pressure testers to thermometers. Drs. Chris Watkins (e-mail: cbw3@cornell.edu) and Jim Bartsch (e-mail: jab35@cornell.edu) of Cornell have written an excellent article on calibration and use of instrumentation essential to storage of apples.

I report the results of research on the storage of Anjou pears packed in trays. There were no significant drawbacks to storage of Anjou pears in trays compared with those that were handwrapped.

Finally, Dr. Martin Hellickson (e-mail: hellicml@engr.orst.edu) reports on the effect of tight-stacking bins on the reduction of temperature of fruit.

I wish you a good storage season.
