Discusses historical farming trends in eastern WA. Estimates yields to be 30% lower than their potential due to soil erosion. Cites past practices such as sweet clover use, hilltop windbreaks, and grass waterways that were very benificial. Proposes farm program change from acreage base to land capability base. More emphasis on spring wheat versus winter wheat, which reduces erosion by about 50%.

8 rotations with N, P, K trts; clear response to N - 3 bu/ac on wheat at 200 #/ac NaNo3; manure response = 6 bu/ac; wheat yielded same after potatoes and fallow than peas or corn; made the most money with wheat/oats/peas ($51/ac/yr); ave. oat yield 1916 = 70+ bu/ac, 1918 = 26 bu/ac. Wheat, oats more affected by drought than corn or potatoes; this is the first mention of statistical methods. T: fertilizer response, rotation X net return.

A sequence of small grains, annual natural pasture with grazing and a short (3 months) summer-fall fallowing showed low productivity when compared with a sequence of continuous grain with a long (6 months) fallowing. Wheat yields, number of ears per surface area and total nitrogen uptake were two times higher with long fallowing. Fertilizers are rarely used. Long-term average yields are in the order of 1.2 tons per hectare.
