This paper: 1) presents a procedure for disaggregating erosion damage from technology gains on crop yields; 2) examines how additive vs. multiplicative differences between technology and topsoil erosion influence real assessments of erosion damage; 3) presents statistical estimates of the relationship between winter wheat yields and topsoil depth in the Palouse; 4) statistically tests whether technology interacted additively or multiplicatively with topsoil depth in influencing wheat yields. The conclusion supports contentions that recent agricultural technical progress mask serious long-term degredation of soil productivity, which will stunt future yield payoff to technical progress.
