Soils in South Dakota were sampled after pasture establishment and 8 yrs later. Soil N and BD increased and P decreased. OM increased, but only slightly. All pastures were grazed. T: Average N, OM, P and BD of soils from pasture in 1965. Statistical significance of differences.

Both surface and subsurface horizons were examined for the effects of cultivation. When similar horizons were compared, the following chemical differences were noted: 1) organic C content was 26% less in Ap of cultivated; 2) water-soluble Si was 49, 46 and 21% greater in A, Bt, and Btk horizons of cultivated pedons respectively; 30 water soluble Mg, Na, and K were 42, 32, and 18% lower in C horizons of cultivated pedons respectively. For physical properties, bulk density was 18% greater in cultivated Ap horizons and they contained 38% more very fine sand and 10% less silt. A and Btk virgin horizons had greater wet aggregate stability, and virgin A horizons averaged 30% more water retained at 0 MPa tension.
