1344. Clements, H.F.. 1937. Studies in the drought resistance of the sunflower and the potato.. Research studies of the State College of Washington, Vol. V:97-98, Pullman, WA.
Sunflower maintained metabolism better than potato. The nitrogen metabolism was maintained throughout the drought. Sunflower responded by reducing leaf area. Potato could not respond and died prematurely.

1353. Clements, H.F.. 1937. Studies in drought resistance of the soy bean.. Research studies of the State College of Washington, Vol.V (1):1-16.
Growth of plant was observed under normal and drought conditions. Growth under drought conditions was reduced. Hemi-cellulose under drought-resisting plants is much higher; soluble sugars did not change; total starch is increased. Although drought does not slow photosynthesis, it does slow the translocation of plant material. However, N metabolism is maintained at a higher level during drought, even though the growth rate is reduced. T: Growth curves for te various plant organs for 1926-27. Moisture content for various plant organs 1926-27. Nitrogen content for various plant organs 1926-27.

1608. Doneen, L.D.. 1934. Nitrogen in relation to composition, growth and yield of wheat.. WA Agr. Expt. Sta. Bull. #296.
On soil with adequate N, adding sodium nitrate retarded wheat growth. The carbohydrate - N ratio of plant tissue was not affected by fertilizer treatment or variety. Under extreme conditions (e.g. variations in N or moisture) there were considerable differences in varietal adaptations. The addition of N after normal tillering caused production of new tillers and increased yields. Fall fertilization led to higher water use and spring moisture deficit. T: many tables. e.g.: Composition of total sugar, non-coagulate nitrogen, amino N, and nitrate on wheat grown under various soil treatments. Yield of grain and straw of wheat treated with sodium N. N removed from soil by grain and straw of wheat treated with different amounts of sodium N/ac. Yield of grain and straw of wheat treated with 500 lb. sodium N/ac.

2015. Foulds, W.. 1978. Response to soil moisture supply in three leguminous species. I. Growth, reproduction and mortality.. New Phytol. 80:535-545..
The study compared white clover, birdsfoot trefoil, and black medic under conditions of high and low soil moisture. Black medic exhibited the most plasticity to moisture condition. On moist soils, it formed substantial vegetative growth and high numbers of seed. In drought conditions, it was the most tolerant at all growth stages, forming many seeds even when vegetative growth was low. Seeds per plant at high and low moisture were 80,000 and 3000 respectively. Competition by perennials during black medic seedling growth seriously inhibits the colonization of this species. Both the immature and adult stages of black medic show an effective avoidance of desiccation.
