Current cultivars of major crops would yield 25-50 % more with the same water were it not for constraints of diseases and pests. In general, the higher the yield potential, the greater the range between poorest and best yield for a locality and year. Yields can be routinely increased by fumigation and fungicide application. In the Pacific Northwest, the difference between actual yield and potential yield widens as one moves from the driest wheat-fallow areas to annual crop areas to irrigated wheat.
