Adapted to wheat and barley area of the western U.S.; needs low humidity during the later season; an annual of the thistle family; spring planted needs 110-150 days to mature; seedlings tolerate 20 degrees F; needs soil moisture equal to 25 inches/yr; can draw moisture from 8-12 ft depths. Highest yields follow summer fallow; plant between Apr10 and May 20. Can drill in rows 6-14" apart. Diseases can be a problem - rust, root rot, leaf spot, Verticillium wilt.

Vegetable oil can be used as a substitute for diesel in emergencies. Engine damage and poor performance are possible consequences, though. Descriptions of the potential problems are included.
