Adapted to wheat and barley area of the western U.S.; needs low humidity during the later season; an annual of the thistle family; spring planted needs 110-150 days to mature; seedlings tolerate 20 degrees F; needs soil moisture equal to 25 inches/yr; can draw moisture from 8-12 ft depths. Highest yields follow summer fallow; plant between Apr10 and May 20. Can drill in rows 6-14" apart. Diseases can be a problem - rust, root rot, leaf spot, Verticillium wilt.

Vegetable oil can be used as a substitute for diesel in emergencies. Engine damage and poor performance are possible consequences, though. Descriptions of the potential problems are included. Transesterification makes the vegetable oils more similar in viscosity to diesel, an important step. The brochure details on-farm ester production with rapeseed oil.
